Hadi is a Colombian of arabian heritage. He works in the hotel business and is the F & B Manager of an international Hotel in Xi'an. He is very excited of working in China and to collect a lot of valuable experience for his life and career. Hadi lives in Xi'an since quite a time now - almost 1,5 years - and enjoys his stay in Xi'an but plans to move on to develop his career in hotel management.I was born in November 18 1986.

How long have you been living in Xi’an?One year and 4 months. When did you come up with the idea of living in Xi’an? The job opportunities in Xian attracted me to apply to this city for a managerial experience. Was it hard to get a visa or a work permit? All paperwork was done by my employer, I was only asked for some paperwork from my country of residence. How do you make your living in Xi’an? I work for a well known hotel in Xi'an.

Xi'an itself is an interesting experience aside for the job, it's good to know different people with different ideas and opinions, food in Xi'an is also well known in this region, so exploring all the different things can be an exciting adventure.

Do you speak Chinese and do you think it's important to speak the local language?

I understand very basic Chinese, I will put more effort into learning this language because it can be very useful to move around in the city, because local people in the streets and shops and public places do not speak English.

Do you miss home and family sometimes?

Sure this sacrifice is necessary in order to experience this new part of the world.

Do you have other plans for the future?

My plan is to progress in my career and to benefit as much as possible from my stay in Xian.

What about housing, have you bought, or are you renting a home? How much do you pay for it?

I am currently living in a hotel. My employer provides me with accommodation within my workplace.

What is the cost of living in Xi’an?

The culture shock which seems to last longer than just a shock, Chinese way of life is very different from the rest of the world, jokes and expressions are not compatible with my understanding of what is funny and many normal situations for them seem uncomfortable, awkward and strange for me.

What do you think about the Chinese?

Chinese as people are loyal, and a good Chinese friend will probably be a very good and caring friend, they like games, to have fun. They are a result of a developing and a very long culture which gives them good attributes, but they seem to have excluded the idea of proper manners and politeness in their culture, much of what seems normal to them might seem inappropriate in most cultures.

What are the differences between life in Dubai and here in China?

One advantage that Xian has, it’s that it has low prices, and this gives me more flexibility in doing what want anytime and anywhere.

How was the change to speaking in a foreign language (English) all day long?

I have gotten much better at expressing myself in body language to get through people.

Do you plan to study Mandarin?

Yes, I will put more effort because it is worth it

What are the positive and negative aspects of living in Xi’an?

Positive are the cheap prices, the nightlife is good, and restaurants are nice, and most Chinese people are friendly to foreigners. Negative, is the difficulty of communication, the difficulty of living in a city that the majority don’t have the same ideology about proper manners and behaviour in public places, which for me its essential.

Do you have any tips for our readers about living in Xi’an?

Living in xian will give you good job opportunities to develop your career.
Tourists will enjoy all aspects of it, because most visited tourist sites in Xian are well maintained and clean and has English speaking staff, the reason being is because this brings a lot of money to Xian. Also tourists will not experience the daily contact with locals thus, not seeing the differences in ideology, also they will not be stared at and called “law wai” (which means foreigner) over 40 times a day.
