ZTE introduces 4G E-mail

The chinese telecommunication equipment company ZTE - with a research and development centre in Xi'an - introduces for the first time in Germany its products and solutions for the future mobile communications standard LTE (Long Term Evolution). In a showcase for Vodafone, ZTE demonstrates its leading position in integrated mobile broadband solutions for the 4th generation of radio technologies (4G).

With its SDR technology (Software Defined Radio) ZTE enables network operators a cost-efficient and fast closure of supply gaps in the broadband area as well as a cost-saving buildup of a commercial LTE network while maintaining a parallel operation of different networks within the same basis stations. The new mobil communications standard LTE - which will provide users with more bandwidth, faster transfer rates and high speed access to mobile web applications - will be established step by step throughout Germany in 2010.

"With our solutions for the 4th generation of radio technologies we are able to respond very flexible to all requirements of network operators. In our SDR basis stations it is possible to operate all mobile communication standards, and that greatly decreases the costs for providers and is at the same time eco-friendly and space saving" said Dr. Zhigang Zhang, Vice President for ZTE Europe and North-America.

ZTE - being a pioneer in the field of "Next Generation Networks" (NGN) - is involved in the development of LTE technology since quite a time now and supports network providers to commercialize the new standard.

Xi'an plays an important role: More than 2000 engineers in ZTE's development centre in Xi'an are researching and developing LTE technology.

Just recently ZTE opened a new LTE research & development centre in USA (Richardson, Texas). To demonstrate LTE applications to a world wide audience, ZTE will establish an own LTE-network for the China pavillion during the Shanghai Expo 2010.

ZTE (Chinese: 中兴通讯) (Zhong Xing Telecommunication Equipment Company Limited) is a publicly-owned, Chinese corporation that designs and manufactures telecommunications equipment and systems.

Based in Shenzhen, and established in 1985 ZTE offers a wide variety of telecommunication products and services, including value-added services such as video on demand and streaming media to its customers, which are primarily telecommunications service providers, mobile network operators, etc.

LTE

LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the last step toward the 4th generation (4G) of radio technologies designed to increase the capacity and speed of mobile telephone networks. Where the current generation of mobile telecommunication networks are collectively known as 3G (for "third generation"), LTE is marketed as 4G. Most major mobile carriers in the United States and several worldwide carriers have announced plans to convert their networks to LTE beginning in 2009. LTE is a set of enhancements to the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) which will be introduced in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 8. Much of 3GPP Release 8 will focus on adopting 4G mobile communications technology, including an all-IP flat networking architecture. On August 18, 2009, the European Commission announced it will invest a total of €18 million into researching the deployment of LTE and LTE Advanced. More info...

SDR

A Software-Defined Radio (SDR) system is a radio communication system where components that have typically been implemented in hardware (e.g. mixers, filters, amplifiers, modulators/demodulators, detectors. etc.) are instead implemented using software on a personal computer or other embedded computing devices. While the concept of SDR is not new, the rapidly evolving capabilities of digital electronics are making practical many processes that were once only theoretically possible.

A basic SDR may consist of a computer (PC) equipped with a sound card, or other analog-to-digital converter, preceded by some form of RF front end. Significant amounts of signal processing are handed over to the general purpose processor, rather than done using special-purpose hardware. Such a design produces a radio that can receive and transmit a different form of radio protocol (sometimes referred to as a waveform) just by running different software. More info...
