The year of no tigers E-mail
News - Xi'an News
Written by ND
An unusual idea had the Qinling Wild Animal Safari Park in Xi'an. They selected three people to live with 48 tigers for 72 hours. They lived in a small cage within the tiger enclosure so they could record every aspect of the animal's lives for three days. The students have been provided with cameras, computers and other gadgets to record the animals' activities around the clock.

A spokesman for the zoo said: "We want to celebrate the Year of the Tiger and also raise awareness of the need to protect wildlife." Over 667 locals and a couple of expats as well applied for the three places. This looks more like a PR gag than a serious attempt to raise awareness in people's mind that tigers are the most endangered species on our earth. The "Year of the Tiger" is not really a year of the tiger. To be more precise, it is a terrible irony that in the "Year of the Tiger" the tiger itself is near to disappear from our planet.

According to World Wildlife Fund there are an estimated 3,200 (!) tigers left in the wild on the planet, the irony of the fact that this year will be the Chinese Year of the Tiger is not lost. But the question is: In the face of crushing pressures from habitat loss and illegal poaching, how many tigers will be left in twelve years when the next Chinese Year of the Tiger rolls around? None? A handful? Actions like the Qinling Safari Park orchestrates are great for getting attention and increase business but it will not contribute to the survival of the Tigers.

Top Ten Critically Endangered Species

2. Polar Bear
3. Pacific Walrus
4. Magellanic Penguin
5. Leatherback Turtle
6. Bluefin Tuna
7. Mountain Gorilla
8. Monarch Butterfly
9. Javan Rhinoceros
10. Giant Panda
