More museums for Xi'an E-mail
News - Xi'an News
Written by ND
Xi'an is currently launching a massive campaign to create and open more museums to establish Xi'an as China`s premier "Museum City". Shaanxi's provincial authorities published a list of museums and monuments that are free to the public. The Small Goose Pagoda for instance, is now open to public visitors for free. Another great and a must-see museum is the Shaanxi History Museum which is free to visit without purchasing tickets since March 2008. However, an ID card or passport is necessary to get a free ticket.

The most popular museum, the Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors Museum cannot open completely for free, but  timetables should be determined to gradually reduce the ticket price and eventually make them free of charge.

Altogether, there are now 12 Museums which are open to anyone for free. No less than 43 museums will be opened for free in 2010, as stated on the Shaanxi Government website. It is well known that Xi'an is one of the oldest cities in the country and incredibly rich in artifacts, relicts and ancient places. It is more than logical that more museums are being opened in the city. And more should be made free of charge so that Chinese people are well read on their own history with free access. Be aware that, if you plan to visit one of those museums in Xi'an these days you might encounter endless line-ups and waiting times of 1-2 hours (especially on weekends).

In 3 years time, so it is planned, Xi'an wants to double its number of museums. This goal is possible with private financiers and institutions.

A small selection of museums in Xi'an:

  • Shaanxi History Museum
  • Stele Forest Museum
  • Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors Museum
  • Hanzhong Museum
  • Bampa Museum
  • Zhouyuan Museum
  • Xi'an Banpo Museum
  • Maoling Museum
  • Han Yangling Museum
  • Yaozhou Kiln Museum
  • Baoji Bronze Museum
  • Guanzhong Folk Arts Museum
  • Xianyang Museum

Hanyangling museum seems to get forgotten on the silk road.. but for those who travel to see the Terracotta warriors (Qin Emperor), should venture to Hanyangling (Han emperor) site.. has miniature terracotta warriors and shows a vast history of the people that conquered the Qin empire.
