International is what? E-mail
City Life - Report
Written by Peter
What are the criteria in China used for a company to be allowed to term the phrase “International” within the title of their business, eg International Hotel. It seems apparent to me that this is a clever deux started by someone, with an idea that far stretches meeting demands of “International” clients.

Let us dive deeper into this “International” word, by using two examples of places I have been at recently with the word in their names.

Staying at “InsertCityNameHere International Hotel” in China, I expected:

  1. English speaking staff and correctly translated hotel books
  2. International Food (at least one thing with cheese in it)
  3. A massage parlour offering massage, not prostitution
  4. A location conveniently placed around other things of an International comfort
  5. Overly inflated price

The hotel met one of my expectations, overly inflated price. Seriously, how can it be “International” when they do not speak English or any other foreign language. The smallest thing would be to have some foreign food. One of the funniest mistranslations I have read was in the hotel book, and this is word for word. “If you are drunk in the room, call housekeeping and they will bring cup of tea. Please don’t use carpet or towel, or you need pay RMB200 cleaning.”

The other place I will look at is an airport. This airport which I will also omit the city name, is seemingly a large airport within the boundaries of China.

My expectation for an International Airport:

  1. International Flights
  2. International Food
  3. English speaking staff
  4. Overly inflated prices

Well, once again, they met one of my expectations, overly inflated prices. Seriously, this place has no international flights (Hong Kong and Taiwan, I am classing you as China for this). When I have a 4hour transit, I would like to enjoy something more than dried meat/fruit and a bowl of instant noodles. “International”, I think not.

In retrospect, at least these businesses are prepared for when in 15 years from now, these regions will have some International visitors. I guess that if these businesses weren’t using the International word in their titles, then some other Chinese businessman would be sitting around with his friends talking about how he/she owns blah International blah.

Definition of "International"

Something (a company, language  or organization) international mostly means that it involves more than one nation (country). The term international as a word means involvement of, interaction between or encompassing more than one nation, or generally reaching beyond national boundaries. For example, international law, which is applied by more than one country over the world, and international language which is a language spoken by residents of more than one country.

In American English, "International" is also commonly used as a euphemism for "foreign" or even "foreigner." ► Click here to learn more

"International" in company names also bothers me. Here's another one: "集团". It means "group". You can see a vendor stall in a market with that word in its name. The company isn't even legally registered, let alone a group. I had a business partner way back who named his company with the word "group" just because he had two desks in a market instead of just one. He owned both. When I asked him why, he just said it made his company (which wasn't a company) sound more important and respectable. Be wary about company names. I don't even trust "有限公司".
