City Life - Blogs & Columns
Written by Bro Fan
These days I never seem to have nearly as much time as I used to to randomly drift around the internet, catching up with some of the quality blogs that are out there. Since I’m no longer doing a desk job here in Xi'an like I was in HK, the temptation to waste an hour or three of the day never rears its head.

Good in a way, I guess, but it’s been a while since I’ve been able to find out what’s going on in the more interesting corners of the globe, and challenge the idea firmly held by all women that any guy who has anything at all to do with the internet must immediately be a first class geek or soap dodger extraordinaire with halitosis. Plus the fact that the Chinese government won’t let me onto Blogspot sites, Facebook and Youtube, plus an ever increasing number of other platforms, just in case a rash spate of personal opinions breaks out within the country - and who knows where that might lead.

It’s all too easy to bash China. In fact, not just China, it’s just all too easy to bitch, full stop. Let’s face it, when you feel strongly about something, you’re likely to write about it, and more likely than not you feel strongly about something when it’s seriously pissing you off.

So whilst some of my posts on New Dynasty may not always be dripping with praise, I guarantee I’d be whinging a hell of a lot more if I didn’t have some great moments to balance it with. Living in China is never going to be easy for anyone, and so when something turns out better than you expected in your wildest dreams, your grin is just a leeeetle bit more deserved. Take for example, just simple pleasures like reading signs here - you first arrive in China, and everything is just a succession of meaningless squiggles that mean bugger all. The more you look, the more you are well and truly screwed - how can you possibly go about learning such a ridiculous language?!

Soon the doodles begin to become recognisable, and before you know it - it’s happened - you can understand what that sign says in the restaurant you eat in every day. What an awesome breakthrough - none of the rest of it makes sense, but something, just anything - makes sense. You’re getting there. It’s such a sense of achievement that you’re starting to break down this impenetrable wall - that it motivates you to go on and on.

Then there’s the food - i talk about it all the time, and it’s as good as you can imagine. Forget sickly sweet sweet and sour pork and chao mein from the Chinese at home - regardless of what you may have thought before, Chinese food is awesome, and so different that there is always something there you’ll like. Always. Just stay clear of those innards…

Fresh fruit carts dragged in by 200 year old horses into the suburbs every evening, all the latest films on DVD even before their release in cinemas, the butchering of the English language that never fails to leave me in mild hysteria, the generosity and warmth of the random punters you meet on the street, the feeling at times that you are at least a B-list celebrity simply for eating in that Muslim noodle shop, the warm spring onion cakes on the way to school every morning, the smile on the face of the dude who fixes your bike for the 4th time that day….

Every day is an adventure, whether you like it or not - at times it drives you mad, but it is both infuriating and hilarious - you know at the end of the day you’ll get over it, whatever it is, and your blood pressure will return to normal.

Now if only that fcuking woman upstairs would stop hacking up her lungs all night...
