News - Xi'an News
Written by Alex Absar
Students, teachers and scholars from Bangladesh living in Xi'an/Shaanxi and their friends, gathered together on 16th December, 2010 to celebrate the 39th Victory day of Bangladesh which remarks winning Bangladesh over from Pakistan after 265 days of liberation war on 16th December, 1971.

All the Bangladeshis living in Shaanxi got together at Northwest Agricultural University, Yangling and spend a whole day to share the spirit of the Victory day. At the meeting, they discussed about the quality of education in Bangladesh to compare with China, the current political situation of Bangladesh, wider usage of Bengali language on the web and IT  industry to make accessible and readable for ordinary Bangladeshi people.

They also exchanged their ideas about the possible ways to contribute to their motherland being in abroad. After the discussion, they had lunch together with delicious Bangladeshi food.

In the afternoon, they rallied up to the lake nearby to commemorate their motherland of river "Bangladesh". They sang their national anthem and some other popular Bengali songs by the lake and had well-known Bangladeshi tea to end the great event.

Bangladeshi Victory Day Celebration

Victory Day (Bengali: বিজয় দিবস Bijôe Dibôsh) is a national holiday in Bangladesh celebrated on December 16. On this day in 1971, the Pakistani Army surrendered to the Indo-Bangladeshi High Command in Dhaka, ending the 9 month-long Bangladesh Liberation War and 1971 Bangladesh atrocities. General AAK Niazi, the Commanding officer of the Pakistani Armed Forces located in East Pakistan, surrendered his forces to Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora, the Allied forces commander.

India also commemorates victory over Pakistan on the same day in 1971 on Vijay Diwas. Click here for more info about the Bangladesh Liberation War. (Wikipedia)
