News - Xi'an News

Visitors to the ancient city of Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, now have a chance to do relics repair themselves as a local museum is inviting the public to participate in a "cultural relics surgery" activity. Shaanxi History Museum is breaking with convention to allow members of the public to help with restoration work like pottery and carving repairs under the instruction of experts.

"Restoration work can be so delicate that a drop of sweat can hurt a bronze item. Visitors mostly only participate in easy work like checking and matching fragments. Difficult work, like using chemical elements to coat relics stay in the hands of experts," said bronze ware expert Fu Wenbin.

As part of its business proposal to double its revenues from the Asian region by 2020, Finnair has announced further expansion across the region with the planned introduction of the first ever non-stop scheduled services between Europe and the Chinese city of Xi’an.

The carrier plans to offer a three times weekly link from its Helsinki hub on a seasonal basis from summer 2013 with flights scheduled to operate from June 14, 2013 until October 26, 2013. Located in central-northwest China, Xi’an is a metropolis of about 8 million people and a growing centre in the development of China’s aerospace and software industries.  The city is also an ancient imperial capital and an historic cradle of Chinese civilisation.  The world-famous Terracotta Army, the vast collection of burial sculptures found around the mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, is located about 40 km to the east of the city centre.

Senseless murder in Xi'an: The Piano made him do it E-mail
News - Xi'an News
Written by Olivia
On Oct 23rd, 2010, Yao Jiaxin, a college junior in Xi’an Conservatory of Music hit a 26 year-old woman with his car. When he noticed the victim was taking down his license plate number, he got out of the car, took out a knife and stabbed her 8 times to death. Li Meijin is professor of criminology in Chinese People’s Public Security University and she’s a regular guest in some of the country’s news programs.

This time, she also gave her analysis and commented on this controversial murder case but caused an even wider dispute. When asked to comment on the murder, the professor of criminology said," We all know music can mold one’s temperament. Yao plays piano well. He enters university, he should have a mature way of thinking and attitude, he should know what’s important and what’s not. Thus, people find it really hard to figure out why this incident would happen at all. In my opinion, there are a lot of reasons for it, one of which I think it’s there are many things missing in his process of growing up. "

Shooting in Xi'an E-mail
News - Xi'an News
Written by Peter
Last Friday night (November 5th, 2010), at 23:40. A taxi driver was shot 3 times by a passenger. It was reported he was shot in the head, arm, and stomach. Exact location is unknown, but it has been mentioned it happened in the southern part of Gaoxin, a district with a high expat population in Xi'an. And mentioned to be an unprovoked attack, with no money being stolen from the taxi driver. Is it difficult to get guns in China? Why shoot a taxi driver?

Supposidly all taxis in Xi'an are getting security cameras installed..with only half completed so far. Is this what the extra Y1 per trip is for (and not for the price of gas)? I for one hope the taxi driver is recovering well in hospital. I use taxis at night time quite often. Quite shocking to hear there are unlawful people with guns walking around Xi'an.

Girl died of malnutrition E-mail
News - Xi'an News
Written by Key
Xi'an, 26.09.2010, a 14 year old girl named Xiao Ling (a pseudonym) passed away; the cause of death was shocking: long term malnutrition causing anemia and multiple organ failure. What made Xiao Ling to have such a terrible fate? In 2006 her father got laid off from work and started collecting trash for living. Then her mother passed away in 2007 due to illness, the entire family only had less than 300 yuan income each month.

Every meal was just bun and noodles. Xiao Ling was just entering 3rd  grade in junior high this year, when she felt sick she never had the money to go see a doctor, she just rested at home. Until one day her legs really gave out, but when she went to the doctor it was too late, her young life had coming to an end. Looking at her daughter’s portrait and her cinerary casket, Zhao Liying could not stay seated anymore; he took out her daughter’s things, hugged her portrait and started to cry. In eastern outskirts of Xi’an, 40-year-old Zhao Liying held a bunch of colorful clothes, walked slowly to the trash downstairs and threw all the clothes into the trash. His 14-year-old daughter Xiao Ling (a pseudonym) had just passed away.
