Stucked in a Washing machine E-mail
News - Xi'an News

One could say that it was almost a huge contingent that was mobilized for a little child who got stucked in a washing machine: Police officers, firemen and even a technician rushed over to an apartment in Xi'an to free little Bei Bei (3 years old) from her misery. One morning, Bei Bei's grandmother heard her grandchild's terrible cries. When she looked for her, she found her granddaughter stuck with both her knees and backside inside the washing machine.

She desperately tried to pull little Bei Bei out, but she failed. But wait: There is the police - your friend and helper! She grabs the phone and dials 110 and 10 minutes later 2 police officers arrive and inmediately try to free Bei Bei. But they fail as well. Little Bei Bei just doesn't want to leave the washing machine.

Xi'an is currently launching a massive campaign to create and open more museums to establish Xi'an as China`s premier "Museum City". Shaanxi's provincial authorities published a list of museums and monuments that are free to the public. The Small Goose Pagoda for instance, is now open to public visitors for free. Another great and a must-see museum is the Shaanxi History Museum which is free to visit without purchasing tickets since March 2008. However, an ID card or passport is necessary to get a free ticket.

The most popular museum, the Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors Museum cannot open completely for free, but  timetables should be determined to gradually reduce the ticket price and eventually make them free of charge.

Micron Technology, Inc., a large producer of semiconductor devices recently signed a new investment agreement with the Xi'an Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone.

According to the agreement, Micron will pump 300 million USD into a semiconductor testing project in Xi'an. Micron is a world-leading semiconductor solution provider. This is not the first time that Micron invests in Xi'an.

250 million USD were paid to build a semiconductor packaging and testing base in Xi'an before. The base became operational on 20. March 2007, reached an export value of 617 million USD in 2009 and created more than 2,000 jobs in Xi'an.

The year of no tigers E-mail

An unusual idea had the Qinling Wild Animal Safari Park in Xi'an. They selected three people to live with 48 tigers for 72 hours. They lived in a small cage within the tiger enclosure so they could record every aspect of the animal's lives for three days. The students have been provided with cameras, computers and other gadgets to record the animals' activities around the clock.

A spokesman for the zoo said: "We want to celebrate the Year of the Tiger and also raise awareness of the need to protect wildlife." Over 667 locals and a couple of expats as well applied for the three places. This looks more like a PR gag than a serious attempt to raise awareness in people's mind that tigers are the most endangered species on our earth. The "Year of the Tiger" is not really a year of the tiger. To be more precise, it is a terrible irony that in the "Year of the Tiger" the tiger itself is near to disappear from our planet.

Did you know: Marriott International has signed a long-term management agreement with Shaanxi Chang’An Construction & Investment Development a good while ago (2008) for an upscale new Marriott-branded hotel scheduled to open in Xi’an in 2011.

The coming 315-room Xi’an Marriott Hotel will be a part of the Chang’An Metropolis Center on Nanguan Zhengjie, which is near to the South Ancient City Gate in Xi’an’s central business district and within easy reach of major historical sites and entertainment areas. Xi’an’s hi-tech zone is about a 15-minute drive away. “We’re delighted to have one of our premier hotel brands represented in Xi’an, one of China’s most important historic cities and currently a major transportation and economic hub,” said Ed Fuller, president and managing director of international lodging for Marriott International. “We are confident that the Xi’an Marriott Hotel will be very popular among business, conference and leisure visitors to the city.”

"Scotiabank's increased investment in Xi'an City Commercial Bank is a great opportunity for us to capitalize on the strength of the China market and on the strong relationship that we have already built with XACB."
