Chinese Massage PDF Print E-mail
City Life - Practical Tips
Written by Noruma Mueller
One of the nice things of being in China is the leisure of a massage. I started going to the massage a couple of weeks after I arrived in Xi’an and meanwhile I try to go every week. I do not know much about the science behind the chinese massage but as my teacher told me, chinese massage belongs to the tradicional chinese medicine and has a long history.

Like everywhere here in China, everything can be very easy or very complicated if you don’t understand people or if you can’t make yourself understood. Here I have a little simple list of words which can make massage going a bit easier. So you can understand and also express what you want while in the massage.

Pickpockets/Pickpocketing E-mail
City Life - Practical Tips
Written by Peter
When I first came to Xi’an as a tourist more than a year ago, I was told “Xi’an is the pickpocket capital of China”. I like to see things at first hand, and not believe the hype, so I shrugged this off as a comment by someone who fears the unknown. Now a conscientious adventurer is one who is aware of his belongings at all times, to be aware of their surroundings, and to understand that any attempts on you will be a surprise that seems normal.

Something you will notice in Xi’an, is the locals wear backpacks on their front (cancelling out the meaning of the name “backpack”). I understand the need for this if in crowded areas, such as buses. But if leisurely strolling around is there a need for such a fashion statement. Actions like these lead me to believe that this comment about Xi’an being the pickpocket capital, was a rumour started by a  passer-through tourist, who did not stop to ask “why”?.

Order Food: A little Guide PDF Print E-mail
City Life - Practical Tips
Written by Noruma Mueller
I have been living in China for one year now. And like most foreigners, I always ended up in the same few restaurants and always ordered the same few dishes. Even in restaurants with an English menu or with pictures. I often didn't know what the dishes are, either because of translations like “bacteria fungus fried” or because the pictures don't really help you recognize the animal or find out if it still has lots of tiny bones.

It took me a very long time before I gave up and started learning some Chinese characters in order to be able to order food in a restaurant. And there are so many nice little street restaurants. With smells calling the people to go inside. But if you can't read Chinese - how the hell are you going to order? So, I  started to study the menus of my favourite restaurants and I must confess I was very surprised to find out that only a few characters can help a lot. You don’t believe me? Just have a look at the explanations below.
