Description
The Modigliani Quartet was formed in 2003 and first attracted international attention in 2004 by winning the Frits Philips String Quartet competition in Eindhoven. The Quartet took First Prize at the Vittorio Rimbotti competition in Florence in 2005, and won the highly prestigious Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York in 2006, allowing them to regularly tour in the US since then.
It has since become one of the world’s most sought after chamber ensembles, having been invited to perform in such major venues and festivals as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Théâtre du Châtelet, Wigmore Hall, LSO St Luke’s, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, La Fenice , Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, Rheingau Festival, Lucerne Festival, and Tokyo’s Kioi Hall. Upcoming performances include those in Valencia’s Palau de la Musica, Brussels’ Palais des Beaux-Arts, Vienna’s Musikverein and Konzerthaus, the Gstaad Festival, and Luxemburg’s Philharmonie. In the fall of 2010 the Quartet will tour Japan. The following year they will tour in Australia and New Zealand with Sabine Meyer prior to a U.S. tour in 2012.
The Modigliani Quartet regularly plays chamber music with international artists such as Michel Dalberto, Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Anne Gastinel, Gary Hoffman, Eric Le Sage, Paul Meyer, Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, Sabine Meyer, and Sol Gabetta.
The Quartet studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where it worked with the Ysaÿe Quartet. They also have worked with members of the Artemis Quartets at the Berlin University of Arts, and with Walter Levin, György Kurtág and Volker Jacobsen.
The Quartet released its first CD in 2006, on Nascor. Reviewers were impressed by the group’s highly promising talent. A Haydn CD was released in 2008 on Mirare, receiving further high praise and confirming the Quartet’s stature and maturity. Its most recent CD, of works Mendelssohn quartets, was released in August 2010, also on Mirare.
Thanks to the generosity and support of private sponsors, the Modigliani quartet plays on outstanding Italian instruments:
Philippe Bernhard plays a 1780 violin by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini.
Loic Rio plays a 1734 violin by Alessandro Gagliano .
Laurent Marfaing plays a 1696 viola by Matteo Goffriller.
François Kieffer plays a 1706 cello by Matteo Goffriller (former”Warburg").
